Education Initiatives
We are committed to empowering the next generation of adventure storytellers.
At 5Point Film, we believe every young person has a story worth telling — and the right to see themselves reflected on screen. Our education initiatives harness the transformative power of adventure storytelling to spark curiosity, build empathy, and help students step into their own lives as capable, creative protagonists.
We reach 10,000+ students in-person every year across the greater Colorado watershed, bringing free, bilingual programming directly into schools, classrooms, and the Flagship Festival itself — because young people are not just future audiences or future storytellers. They are active participants in shaping the cultural, creative, and environmental narratives of today.
All 5Point education programs are free, bilingual (Spanish/English) whenever possible, and built to endure — resilient, replicable, and sustainable — so that young people across the Colorado watershed continue to have equitable access to storytelling, creative expression, and meaningful connection to the outdoors, and continue to see themselves as powerful, valued, and worthy of being heard.
Why This Work Matters
Regional schools are stretched thin. Arts education is often the first thing cut. And for young people in communities from Battlement Mesa to Aspen — where more than half of students qualify for free or reduced lunch — the gap between creative ambition and real opportunity can feel impossible to bridge.
5Point exists to close that gap. We respond to three interconnected challenges facing students and schools today:
Limited access to arts education. We deliver free, bilingual programming directly into classrooms, removing barriers of cost, language, and geography so every student can engage with film, storytelling, and outdoor-inspired narratives.
The power of representation and voice. More than half of the students we serve are students of color. Through a diverse, intentionally curated film program, students encounter stories and characters from a wide range of lived experiences — affirming that their voices belong in creative and cultural spaces.
A new relationship with the outdoors. At 5Point, time in nature is understood as a fundamental human need — for connection, reflection, challenge, and self-discovery. Adventure film invites students to reimagine themselves as owners of outdoor spaces, not just visitors.
“We are so grateful for 5Point’s cooperation and dedication to our school community.”
Middle School
5Point in the Schools
5Point in the Schools is a quarterly, in-classroom film experience serving approximately 1,000–2,000 middle schoolers across the Colorado watershed each quarter at no cost to the school or students. Featuring age-appropriate adventure films, guided discussion, a Spanish-speaking emcee, and facilitated engagement with special guests, this program creates meaningful, inclusive opportunities for students to engage with storytelling, film, and the outdoors.
Flagship Festival School Visits
During our annual Flagship Festival, world-renowned filmmakers and athletes travel directly to schools throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Through storytelling and conversation, festival guests inspire over 500 students with representation and meaningful connection that goes far beyond the big screen.
“Having 5Point come to us was an incredible opportunity for our school. Not having to worry about the logistics of taking students off campus allowed us to open up the experience to a bigger audience. I can’t think of an easier way to have such a powerful impact on students.”
High School
The Art of Adventure Filmmaking
This is a free, after-hours filmmaking course for 11th and 12th graders — and the only film or filmmaking course available in the Roaring Fork School District. Certified for both high school and college credit at no cost to students, The Art of Adventure Filmmaking centers foundational storytelling and documentary skills while intentionally elevating voices and narratives from communities historically underrepresented in the outdoor industry. Students graduate with real skills, a creative portfolio, and a pathway forward.
The Free Student Film Program
Established in 2010 and serving nearly 800 high school students each year, this program brings students inside 5Point's Flagship Festival. Emceed by world-renowned filmmakers, athletes, and creatives, it showcases films curated specifically to resonate with the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts, activists, and adventurers. By removing cost barriers and placing students within a professional festival environment, this program offers an inspiring, immersive introduction to adventure storytelling and what's creatively possible.
“The movies, the presenters, everything was amazing. I really appreciate this partnership with you all! Thanks for thinking of us.”
University
Colorado Mountain College Festival Internship
5Point's partnership with Colorado Mountain College places a select cohort of CMC students at the center of the Flagship Festival experience. Interns contribute across production, operations, graphic design, social media, and guest services — gaining real-world experience in live event and film festival environments. For current high school students watching from the audience, their presence sends a powerful message: this is what's possible.
Continuing Education & Filmmaker Development
Grant Recipient Mentorship
Each year, 5Point awards tens of thousands of dollars in film grants, but the support doesn't stop at the check. Every grant recipient participates in a structured mentorship process including three rounds of feedback with the 5Point team, plus one-on-one mentorship and professional development opportunities designed to build long-term creative capacity within the adventure storytelling community.
5Point Grantee Showcase
Introduced at the 2026 Flagship Festival, the Grantee Showcase gives every grant recipient a dedicated, standalone screening moment within the festival — because not every film makes the main program, but every filmmaker's story matters. Each screening is paired with a Q&A, creating a bridge between emerging talent and industry professionals who attend specifically to connect with up-and-coming voices.
The 5Point Flagship Festival
The fullest expression of what dedicated creative work can achieve.
For students engaged in 5Point programming throughout the year, the Flagship Festival is the destination. Films born from real vision, craft, and perseverance, celebrated on a big screen in front of a live audience. In 2026, 5Point reduced ticket prices directly in response to feedback from young people, and continues to offer discounts for educators — because witnessing what's possible is one of the most powerful things we can offer.
